UNIVERSITY OUTREACH COURSE IN SEGOVIA

 

 

The National Distance University (UNED) and the Fundación Juanelo Turriano joined forces to deliver an outreach course entitled "Roman engineering. That the greatness of the empire might be attended with distinguished authority in its public buildings", held at the UNED's Segovia headquarters. Co-headed by UNED full professor Alicia Cámara and the Fundación managing director Bernardo Revuelta Pol, the course was attended by 28 students.

 

The following lecturers participated in the course:

 

  • Alonso Zamora, former director of the Segovia Museum
  • Carlos Caballero Casado, archaeologist, editor-in-chief of the journal El nuevo miliario
  • Manuel Durán, lecturer at the School of Civil Engineers, University of Corunna
  • José María Álvarez Martínez, director of the National Museum of Roman Art at Merida
  • Santiago Montero Herrero, full professor of ancient history. Complutense University of Madrid
  • Alicia Alicia Cámara, full professor of art history, UNED
  • Bernardo Revuelta PoI, architect, managing director of the Fundación Juanelo Turriano

 

The course concluded with a visit by all the participants to the Artifex exhibition on display at the former royal mint.

 

The lectures will be published on line in due time.

A recent issue of the on-line journal Blackbird carried an article by scupltress Elizabeth King on a robot custodied by the Smithsonian Institution that some authors attribute to Juanelo Turriano.

100th ANNIVERSARY OF LEONARDO TORRES QUEVEDO'S ROBOT "EL AJEDRECISTA" (the chess player)

LEONARDO TORRES QUEVEDO'S ROBOT

 

On the occasion of the 12th Science Week, the Polytechnic University of Madrid's School of Telecommunications Engineering is commemorating the centennial of the robot "El Ajedrecista" with a number of events: an exhibition, a conference, a round table and a chess tournament.

 

The exhibition on the inventor will be open to the public from 5 to 16 November, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and the conference and chess tournament were held on 7 November at the School.

7th SYMPOSIUM ON EDUCATION AND HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

 

EDUCATION AND HISTORY OF SCIENCE

 

 

The 7th Symposium on Education and History of Science and Technology will take place on 15 and 16 March 2013 at the Institut d' Estudis Catalans, Barcelona, under the title "Guidance, Methodology and Perspectives".

 

This symposium is held in conjunction with the Societat Catalana d' Història de la Ciència i de Tècnica (SCHCT), which has organised ten prior conferences on the relationship between education and the history of science.

 

 

7th LATIN AMERICAN COLLOQUIUM ON CONSERVING THE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

 

CONSERVING THE INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE

 

 

TICCIH México, A.C. has announced that the 7th Latin American Colloquium on Conservation of the Industrial Heritage, entitled "Industrial Heritage and Regional Development: recovery, valorisation, reuse and social participation", will be held in the framework of the 3rd TICCIH México International Seminar.

 

The dates are 27 May to 2 June 2013 and the venue Zacatecas, Mexico.
