Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses. Open for candidacies

Fundación Juanelo Turriano reminds all concerned that the deadline for applying for its Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses is 28 September next.

Topics must be confined to the history of engineering. All branches and eras are eligible. Papers relating to the Foundation’s career will receive preference in scoring.

In memory of José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez

En recuerdo de José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez [In memory of José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez], a transcription of the speeches given at the tribute to José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez, is now available online. The event was organised by the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineers of Madrid and was held on 20 April 2023 at the Institute’s headquarters, in the Agustín de Betancourt Auditorium.

The speakers were Miguel Ángel Carrillo, José Romo, Javier Muñoz, José María Goicolea and Alfredo Pérez de Armiñán.

José Antonio Fernández Ordóñez was a trustee of the Foundation from its creation in 1987 until his death in 2000.

La infraestructura y el dominio hidráulico en los monasterios cistercienses femeninos del Reino de Castilla [Infrastructure and waterworks in female Cistercian monasteries in Castile]. PhD defence

Ester Penas González, winner of the Fundación Juanelo Turriano 2021-2022 PhD research grant, was awarded cum laude honours for her PhD thesis La infraestructura y el dominio hidráulico en los monasterios cistercienses femeninos del Reino de Castilla: génesis, evolución y conservación del patrimonio (1140-1563) [Infrastructure and waterworks in female Cistercian monasteries in Castile: genesis, development and heritage conservation (1140-1563)].

The thesis, supervised by Joaquín Barrio Martín and Manuel Retuerce Velasco, was defended at the Autonomous University of Madrid on 22 June last.

Miracles and machines. A sixteenth-century automaton and its legend

Getty Publications has sent our library a copy of Miracles and machines. A sixteenth-century automaton and its legend, by Elizabeth King and W. David Todd.

This book tells the remarkable story of the 450-year-old automaton called “the monk”. The automaton is attributed to Juanelo Turriano and is in the collection of the National Museum of American History, part of the Smithsonian Institution.

Thirteenth International Molinology Congress

The deadline for submitting abstracts for the Thirteenth International Molinology Congress organised by the Asociación para la Conservación y Estudio de los Molinos (ACEM, Association for the Conservation and Study of Mills) and the Seville Planning Office is extended until 15 July.

The congress will be held at the Royal Artillery Factory in Seville on 24 to 26 November 2023.
