Decease of José Calavera Ruiz

José Calavera Ruiz, civil engineer, died on 25 August. He was a trustee of our Foundation from 2006 to 2019.

Chaired professor emeritus of the Technical University of Madrid, José Calavera Ruiz was recognized worldwide as an eminence in concrete structures. He founded in 1967 the Instituto Técnico de Materiales y Construcciones (INTEMAC). He earned numerous awards and honours, including honorary doctorates from several international institutions.

A member of a numerous of Spanish and foreign professional associations, José Calavera Ruiz wrote any number of monographs and articles and supervised 28 doctoral theses.

In 2014 he won the National Civil Engineering Prize, and in 2017 he received the Outstanding Civil Engineer Award for his distinctive career.

Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses. Open for candidacies

The Fundación Juanelo Turriano would like to issue a reminder that papers can be submitted for the first edition of the Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses until 28 September 2023.

Topics must be confined to the history of engineering. All branches and eras are eligible. Papers relating to the Foundation’s career will receive preference in scoring.

The great engineer who built the Dénia-Alicante train unbeknownst to all

On 19 August the digital newspaper La Marina Plaza published an article entitled El gran ingeniero que forjó el tren Dénia-Alicante en 1915 y que nunca había salido a la luz [The great engineer who built the Dénia-Alicante train in 1915 unbeknownst to all].

The role José Eugenio Ribera played in the railway’s construction is revealed by Inmaculada Aguilar’s research in her book Innovación y modernidad. José Eugenio Ribera Ingeniero de Caminos (1864-1936) [Innovation and modernity. José Eugenio Ribera, civil engineer (1864-1936)], recently published by our Foundation.
