García-Diego International Prize (9th edition)
The Fundación Juanelo Turriano announces the 9th edition of its García-Diego International Prize, worth 12 000 euros, for research in any of the branches of the history of technology. The prize is open to any individual or group submitting an original, unpublished paper in Spanish.

The deadline for submissions is 23 January 2018.

Artifex: Roman engineering, engineer Ignacio González Tascón’s dream. Exhibition

The ribbon to the exhibition entitled Artifex: Roman engineering, engineer Ignacio González Tascón’s dream will be officially cut on Friday 16 June at 7:00 PM at the Asturias Archaeological Museum.

Organised by Fundación Juanelo and the Centre for CEDEX-CEHOPU (Centre for Historic Studies on Public Works and Urban Planning) and sponsored by Fundación Caminos, Aqualia and Caja Rural de Asturias, the showing will be open to the public through 19 October 2017.

Defence of PhD. thesis: Las murallas en las comunidades de Villa y Tierra de la Diócesis de Segovia en los siglos XI a XIII

Alicia Sainz Esteban, awardee of the 2014-2015 edition of the Fundación Juanelo Turriano grant for doctoral research, defended her thesis at the Valladolid School of Architecture on 8 June.

Entitled Las murallas en las comunidades de Villa y Tierra de la Diócesis de Segovia en los siglos XI a XIII, técnica y sistemas constructivos de la arquitectura defensiva medieval [The walls around Villa and Tierra, communities in the Diocese of Segovia, in the eleventh to thirteenth centuries: construction techniques and systems in Medieval defence architecture], the thesis was supervised by Félix Jové Sandoval and Pascual Martínez Sopena.

The Examination Board chaired by Humberto Salazar Amorim Varum awarded Ms Sainz Esteban the highest distinction for her dissertation.

The Archaeological Division of the Chartered Institute of Liberal Arts and Science, in conjunction with the Complutense University of Madrid’s Cultural Heritage Management Research Team, is organising a series of panel discussions on cultural heritage management.

The next in the series, Archaeological heritage in the Canary Islands: an analysis of intervention authority motivation will be held on 20 June at 5:30 PM at the institute’s Madrid headquarters (101 Fuencarral Street, 3rd storey).
