José Calavera Ruiz. Fundación Juanelo Turriano Trustee

José Calavera Ruiz resigned as Fundación Juanelo Turriano trustee in December 2018.

At a luncheon held as a tribute to Professor Calavera on 21 February, he was appointed honorary trustee.

José Calavera Ruiz served as full professor at the Madrid School of Civil Engineers, Technical University of Madrid and founded the Instituto Técnico de Materiales y Construcciones (INTEMAC), of which he is presently Honorary President.

Among other distinctions, he was awarded the National Civil Engineering Prize in 2014, the International Association of Bridges and Structural Engineering’s (IABSE) International Award of Merit in Structural Engineering in 2015 and an honorary doctorate from the University of Cantabria in 2016.

Member of a host of national and foreign professional associations, he has authored any number of monographs and articles and supervised 28 doctor’s theses.

The exhibition entitled Modesto Bargalló (1894-1981), master of masters, is open at Palau de Cerveró, headquarters for the University of Valencia’s López Piñero Inter-university Institute.

Curated by Luis Moreno Martínez, awardee of the 2017-2018 edition of the Juanelo Turriano grant, the showing will run through 28 June 2019.

The book entitled El agua en Toledo y su entorno: épocas romana y medieval [Water in Toledo and surrounds: Roman and Medieval times] is now available in the foundation’s library, thanks to a donation by Jean Passini, co-editor in conjunction with Rebeca Rubio Ribera and Ricardo Izquierdo Benito.

This fresh look at the history of Toledo’s water supply published by the University of Castilla-La Mancha focuses in particular on the designs and projects that preceded Juanelo Turriano's artifice.

Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna y las fortificaciones españolas del siglo XVI [Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna and sixteenth century Spanish fortifications] by Antonio Gil Albarracín, PhD. in history and corresponding member of the Royal Academies of Fine Arts of Granada, Madrid and Murcia, was presented on 27 February at the headquarters of the Asociación Española de Amigos de los Castillos de Madrid.

FUPIA: short documentary film
FUPIA: short documentary film

On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, FUPIA, the foundation for Andalusia’s industrial heritage, is releasing one short documentary film per month around that theme.

February’s film narrates the history of cannon manufacture, highlighting the progress made as well as the difficulties faced by military engineering and the respective industry over the centuries.
