Grants for PhD. studies. Academic year 2019-2020

Fundación Juanelo Turriano awards two 14 400-euro grants yearly for PhD. theses to finance research on the history of science, technology or engineering.

The deadline for submitting applications is 16 September 2019.

Fundación Juanelo Turriano Board of Trustees

Fundación Juanelo Turriano has designated two new trustees, Inmaculada Aguilar Civera and Alicia Cámara Muñoz.

Inmaculada Aguilar is Head of the University of Valencia’s History Department and corresponding member of the San Fernando Fine Arts Academy. Honorary director of the Demetrio Ribes Chair, she also sits on the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute’s Executive Commission for the National Industrial Heritage Plan.

Alicia Cámara is Head of the National Distance University’s (UNED) History of Art Department and principal investigator for a number of research projects on the history of engineering sponsored by the Ministries of Education and Culture, and of  Defence, as well as by other Spanish and foreign institutions. Since 2012 she has headed the UNED’s outreach courses organised in conjunction with Fundación Juanelo Turriano.

Madrid Technical University Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis

David Mencías was recently awarded the Technical University of Madrid’s Prize for Outstanding Doctoral Thesis 2017.

David Mencías, who entitled his thesis La geometría analítica como herramienta de análisis de fábricas históricas [analytical geometry as a tool for analysing historic masonry], benefitted from a Fundación Juanelo Turriano grant for PhD. studies in 2014-2015.

Second Seminar on the River Tajuña and its Hydraulic Heritage

The Second Seminar on the River Tajuña and its Hydraulic Heritage will be held on 13 April under the auspices of ACEM, Asociación para la Conservación y Estudio de los Molinos (Association for Mill Conservation and Studies) and the Municipal Government of Morata de Tajuña, Spain.

ACEM’s Regular Annual Meeting will be held on the next day, followed by a visit to Nuevo Baztán.

FUPIA: short documentary film

FUPIA, the foundation for Andalusia’s industrial heritage, has released another short documentary film in its tenth anniversary series on that theme.

In this new production, Fernando Fernández, industrial engineer with many years of mining experience, discusses the lighting systems used in underground mines, their hazards and development.
