To be the making of: engineering, loyalties and power networks in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. New publication
This eleventh title in the Lecciones Juanelo Turriano de Historia de la Ingeniería [Juanelo Turriano Lectures on the History of Engineering] collection is now available in our Library.

The book revolves around the expression in Spanish so often used at the time, ‘to be the making of’. That saying frequently described the careers of engineers associated with a ruler or military commander, many of whom had a working knowledge of warfare engineering and the control of cities and frontiers.

This publication compiles a series of European case studies authored by reputed specialists that together afford a historical overview of the profession before academic rule standardised promotion and specialisation.
