Turriano-ICOHTEC Prize. 2025

The Turriano-ICOHTEC Prize for books on the history of technology , organised by ICOHTEC and sponsored by Fundación Juanelo Turriano, was awarded to Davide Martino for his PhD thesis Hydraulic philosophy in early modern European cities, read in 2023 at the University of Cambridge.

An honourable mention was awarded to Alwin J. Cubasch for his paper Zu Gast im Automaten. Gastrotechnik im Berlin der Jahrundertwende.


Laudatio

The archaeologist engineer (sixteenth to nineteenth centuries). University extension course

Registration is open for the university extension course El ingeniero arqueólogo (The archaeologist engineer), organised by the Associated Institution of the National Distance University (UNED) at Segovia, with the sponsorship and collaboration of Fundación Juanelo Turriano. The course will be held on 24 to 26 October in Segovia.

This activity, which can be attended in person or on line, live streamed or pre-recorded, is intended for historians, engineers, art and science historians, architects, geographers, tour guides and anyone interested in the subject. It will include a tour of the Royal Mint in Segovia.

Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses. Third edition

Submissions are being accepted for the third Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses, awarded 6000 euros.

Thesis topics must be confined to the history of engineering.

Engineering: From the Enlightenment to the Industrial Revolution

The summer course entitled Engineering: From the Enlightenment to the Industrial Revolution, organised by the Fundación Juanelo Turriano and held at the Madrid School of Civil Engineering, ended on 10 July.

The course concluded with a guided tour of the Royal Glass Factory at La Granja de San Ildefonso, helmed by Paloma Pastor Rey de Viñas.

Fundación Juanelo Turriano will publish digital versions of the lessons.

Decease of Javier Rui-Wamba

Javier Rui-Wamba Martija, civil engineer, chairman and founder of the Esteyco company, passed away on 10 July.

A member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Engineers, he held the National Engineering Prize, the medal of honour of the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineers and the Ildefons Cerdá medal.

In 1998 he took a seat on our foundation’s Advisory Commission, and he was a trustee from 2001 to 2011.

Fundación Juanelo Turriano offers its condolences for the loss of this great engineer, who was also a skilled popularizer for his profession.

Fourteenth CIMO Conference in León

Full (but not definitive) papers for the Fourteenth CIMO Conference in León may be submitted from 1 to 30 September. The conference, whose topic is Age-old landscapes, repertory of wisdom, will be held in León on 16, 17, 18 and 19 October 2025.

Fundación Juanelo Turriano is one of the collaborating institutions.
