Third Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses

The deadline for submissions for the third Pedro Navascués Prize for PhD theses ends on 18 December next.

The 6,000-euro prize recognises PhD theses that contribute fresh insights into the history of engineering. All branches and eras of engineering history are eligible.

Workshop on heritage and public works

An event discussing public works heritage, focusing primarily on public works in Asturias, is scheduled to be held on 3 December at 6:00 PM in the main lecture hall of the University of Oviedo’s historic building.

The participants include Javier León (Fundación Fhecor), who will present a recent edition of a book by Father Pontones, published by Fundación Juanelo Turriano and Fundación Fhecor, highlighting the book’s contributions to the history of bridge engineering.

The event will wind up with a round table on the challenge of preserving and restoring public works.

Félix Candela. The conquest of slenderness

The exhibition Félix Candela. La conquista de la esbeltez [Félix Candela. The conquest of slenderness] opens on 4 December in the main gallery of the Crevillente Community Centre. The show is organised by Fundación Juanelo Turriano and CEDEX-CEHOPU and is curated by Pepa Cassinello.

The exhibition contains a broad range of photographs, drawings, models and audiovisuals attesting to many aspects of Candela’s creative personality and his work. It is open to the public free of charge until 4 April 2026.

El ingeniero arqueólogo [The archaeologist engineer]. Outreach course

The course El ingeniero arqueólogo [The archaeologist engineer], organised by the National Distance University (UNED) with the sponsorship and collaboration of Fundación Juanelo Turriano, was held from 24 to 26 October at the UNED Associated Institution in Segovia.

The lectures will be posted on line by Fundación Juanelo Turriano.

José Antonio Torroja Prize
José Antonio Torroja Prize

On 21 November last, Fundación Eduardo Torroja awarded the José Antonio Torroja Prize for the best master’s dissertation on structural engineering submitted at the Technical University of Madrid. The prize was sponsored by Sika.

The first prize was for Victoria Elena Cedillo García for her civil engineering dissertation “Análisis del comportamiento dinámico de una sección del Acueducto de Segovia mediante modelización con macrobloques rígidos[Analysis of the dynamic behaviour of a section of Segovia Aqueduct through modelling with rigid macroblocks], directed by Nicola Tarque Ruiz and José María Goicolea Ruigómez.

The prize was handed out by the director of the School of civil engineering at the Technical University of Madrid, José Miguel Atienza Riera.

Archaeological digs in Toledo
Archaeological digs in Toledo

Fundación Juanelo Turriano is collaborating in an archaeological excavation project on the Tagus River in Toledo, run by the University of Granada’s Biocultural Archaeology Laboratory (Memolab) and Fundación de Cultura Islámica (FUNCI).

A team of 19 archaeologists will be working at the site of Juanelo’s Artifice to trace out an historic sequence of Toledo’s hydraulic heritage that dates back to the twelfth century.
