Ildefonso Sánchez del Río, civil engineer. An engineer’s legacy. Lecture series

On 12 January Fundación Juanelo Turriano Director Bernardo Revuelta Pol delivered Crónica de un ingeniero relevante en el contexto español de la ingeniería [Chronicle of a significant engineer in the Spanish engineering context], the first of a series of lectures at the Royal Institute of Asturian Studies (RIDEA) in Oviedo.

The lecture series is organised by RIDEA and the Asturian Chapter of the Chartered Association of Civil Engineers. It continues on 19 January with Tipologías constructivas en la obra de Ildefonso Sánchez del Río [Classifying Ildefonso Sánchez del Río’s constructions] by Pedro Plasencia Lozano, and it closes on 26 January with Carmen Adams Fernández and Ignacio Ruiz Latierro’s lecture La obra de Sánchez del Río en Oviedo y la polémica sobre su protección [Sánchez del Río’s work in Oviedo and the controversy surrounding its protection].

Wadi al-Garawi Dam Project dig

Doctor Roser Marsal, Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona’s Institute of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, has begun archaeological excavation work on the Wadi al-Garawi Dam Project (WaGDP).

This project, in which Fundación Juanelo Turriano and other institutions are collaborating, aims to gain a grasp of the dynamics of water management and water culture in ancient Egypt through studying a unique piece of hydraulic engineering, the Sadd el-Kafara dam, and the surrounding landscape.

This research will help analyse and identify areas of this priceless part of Egypt’s historic archaeological heritage for preservation efforts.

The audiovisual catalogue of the exhibit Sagasta, un ingeniero de Caminos por la senda del progreso [Sagasta, a civil engineer on the road to progress] is now available on line. The exhibit, held from 27 October to 21 November 2025, was organised by the Madrid Chapter of the Chartered Association of Civil Engineers.

Fundación Juanelo Turriano Director Bernardo Revuelta Pol was in charge of the exhibit design.

2026 Institutional Awards

The Chartered Institute of Civil Engineers is now accepting nominations for its 2026 honorary memberships, medals of honour and medals for professional excellence.

Nominations must be emailed to the institute’s general secretary at secretariogeneral@ciccp.es before 20 February.
