FUNDACIÓN JUANELO TURRIANO. COLLABORATION WITH THE CATALONIAN RAILWAY MUSEUM (VILANOVA I LA GELTRÚ)

FJT COLLABORATION RAILWAY MUSEUM

The Catalonian Railway Museum and the Standing Working Party on Railway Heritage organised a campaign to restore the Mataró steam locomotive, a replica of the country’s most emblematic steam engine. It was the first locomotive to operate in mainland Spain, 165 years ago, when it ran from Barcelona to Mataró.

The intention is to repair the engine to working order and improve the conditions in which it is displayed to enhance the understanding of how the earliest railway rolling stock operated.

This cooperative project, launched on 28 October, was brought to a successful end on 7 December 2013 after having raised sufficient funds to cover the cost of the repairs. Fundacion Juanelo Turriano contributed significantly to this initiative.
