TIDE MILLS: TRANSFORMATION OF THE AGRICULTURAL SHORELINE. A CONFERENCE

TIDE MILLS

On 20 January, architects Luis Azurmendi Pérez and Mº Ángeles Gómez Carballo delivered a conference at Santander’s Centro de Estudios Montañeses, entitled Tide mills, transformation of the agricultural shoreline, in which they described the possibility of rebuilding the Spanish coastline and its agricultural landscapes based on the testimony gathered from tide mills.

The introduction of maize farming drove the construction of new mills and silos; the mill dams built in the water were also used as wharves. That many are now beached stands as proof that the shoreline has receded. The authors described case studies conducted on the Asón Estuary, Santander Bay and Joyel and Victoria marshes.

NAVEGANTES ESPAÑOLES EN EL OCÉANO PACÍFICO [Spanish sailors on the Pacific Ocean]. BOOK

SPANISH SAILORS ON THE PACIFIC OCEAN

Luis Laorden, engineer and ex-professor with the California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, has authored a book entitled Navegantes españoles en el Océano Pacífico [Spanish sailors on the Pacific Ocean]. This overview of Spain's presence in the immense Pacific Ocean covers the centuries from its discovery by Vasco Núñez de Balboa in 1513 to the end of the 1898 war with the United States and the sale of the rest of the Mariana and Caroline Islands and Palau to Germany in 1899. The book provides the reader with a full account of that history and explains the relationships between events and political motivations each step of the way. The narrative is interlaced with paragraphs extracted from chronicles or diaries written by sailors crossing the ocean.

The book can be purchased from Servicio de Librería. Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos. librería@ciccp.es. Almagro 42, 4ª. 28010 Madrid. +34 913 083 490.
